    • What? The most important fashion exhibition in the country for professionals in the business. Includes catwalks and a range of up-and-coming as wellas famous designers.
  • Hurta Cordel: International Festival of Improvisation
    • When? February 9 - 14
    • Where? Casa Encendida
    • What? A festival that gathers together 50 musicians from over a dozen different countries who take part in spontaneous performances.
  • Caja Madrid Flamenco Festival

    • Where? Casa Encendida & Teatro Canal
    • What? Madrid's most important flamenco festival, featuring Spain's best singers, dancers and musicians.
  • Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair (ARCO)
    • When? February 17 - 21
    • Where? IFEMA
    • What? Modern and contemporary art fair featuring works from around the globe. Both galleries and individual artists participate, highlighting the emerging trends of painting, graphics, video, new media, sculpture, installation, etc. This year's guest country is India; special exhibitions and discussions are organized to explore India's art scene.

    • Where? Various venues.
    • What? Madrid's annual theater festival for children, featuring more than 30 performances by both both national and international theater companies.
  • Madrid Carnival
    • When? February
    • Where? Throughout the city.
    • What? Costume competitions, parties throughout the city and numerous other activities. The festival culminates with the Burial of the Sardine, an elaborate, burlesque-style ritual consisting of a procession and subsequent funeral for a sardine. The ritual evolved from the religious tradition of burying pig fat to mark the commencement of Lent.

    • What? An exhibition of works - installations, watercolors, photographs, sculptures, etc. - by Thomas Schütte, one of the most important German artists of his generation.
  • Maternidades / Motherhoods

    • What? An exhibition of photographs taken by Spanish journalist Bru Rovira that show the unique and intimate bond between mothers and children in countries around the world in the face of war, poverty, illness, hunger, etc.
  • Impresionismo. Un nuevo Renacimiento

    • Where? Fundación Mapfre
    • What? An exhibition featuring 90 works on loan for Paris' Musée D'Orsay by all the great impressionist paints: Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Pisarro, etc.
  • Beijing Time. La hora de China.
    • When? December 18 - March 21
    • Where? Matadero Madrid
    • What? An exhibition that serves as a panoramic vision of artistic creation in contemporary China. Works by 17 Chinese artists of diverse genres are on display.
  • Generaciones

    • Where? Casa Encendida
    • What? An exhibition that propels new Spanish artists of a variety of genres into the national and international spotlight. Just 25 pieces are chosen to be included out of hundreds of entries.
  • Tesoros de las culturas del mundo. Treasures from the cultures of the world
    • When? December 13 - May 10
    • Where? Centro de Arte Canal
    • What? An exhibition of 280 pieces, on loan from the British Museum in London, that cover diverse periods of history and offer a history of the world's cultures in a single trip through time.
  • Pierre Gonnard
    • When? December 17 - February 28
    • Where? Alcalá 31
    • What? An exhibition of 38 photographs - both portraits and landsapes - by French photographer Pierre Gonnard. The photographs depict rural life in the most isolated parts of Northern Spain and Portugal.
  • Monet and Abstraction

    • Where? Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
    • What? An exhibition of works by Claude Monet that focuses on his little-analyzed, post-WWII period of work.
  • Holandeses en El Prado

    • What? A selection of Dutch paintings featuring the most representative works of a variety of genres. Pieces by Rembrandt, Swanevelt, Both and others.
  • Un anhelo de infinito

    • What? An exhibition dedicated to Belgian abstract sculptor, painter, architect and theorist Georges Vantongerloo, considered one of the most important artist - thinkers of the 20th century.
  • El mayor espectáculo del mundo: Juguetes de circo

    • Where? Museo del Traje
    • What? An exhibition based on the world of the circus featuring related objects - toys, posters, dolls, puppets, games, etc. - that recreate tents, animals, acrobats, clowns and other typical circus elements.
  • Mantos de la Eternidad
    • When? September 24 - February 28 (2010)
    • Where? Museo de América (Av. de los Reyes Católicos 6)
    • What? An exhibition of elaborate mummycloths and other objects used in burial rituals of ancient Peru. Discovered in 1925, the exhibition's 82 pieces date back to between 100 B.C. and 200 A.D.

    • What? Dance performance choreographed by Valencian Nacho Duato in collaboration with the Chèjov Theatre International Festival to mark the 150th anniversary of Chèjov's death.
