You are bound to have heard the term tossed out in study abroad conversations, along with the raves that generally accompany it, but you're still finding yourself wondering "what is total language immersion?" or "what differentiates it from other types of language-learning?".

Immersing yourself in something means you are really diving into and surrounding yoruself with it. Just as a child immerses himself in the water to learn to swim, the best and most productive option for a person learning a language is to immerse himself in the language he is trying to learn or improve upon. With a total language immersion program you will be completely surrounded at all times by the language you are trying to learn... in this case, Spanish.

Language "colonies" have been established throughout the world, meaning you can often find a total language immersion program in the language of your choice in your own country. This is a great option if you're on a limited budget and time schedule. Ideally, however, a total language immersion is accompanied and complemented by total cultural immersion. Not only do you get a wonderful travel adventure out of it, but understanding and getting to the know the culture of your language enriches and enhances your language studies all the more.
